The 7 Pillars of Resilience

Building a Life You Don't Want to Escape From

James Sweet · First Edition · April 2026

Most recovery programs focus on what you shouldn't do. This one is a weekly practice for what you should — seven pillars, one day at a time, written by Root to Rise vice president James Sweet.

A weekly rhythm — one principle a day — written for people who are tired of falling, and ready to build something they do not want to leave. Read it here or download the full PDF.

The weekly rhythm

Seven days. One practice. Repeat.

You do not finish this book. You live it. Miss a day, pick up wherever you are. Day 7 is the review that turns seven ideas into one way of walking through the week.

  1. Day 1 · Vision

Why am I doing this? What kind of life am I trying to build?

Recovery is not only what you leave behind. It is what you are moving toward. Write it down. Keep it where you will see it.

  2. Day 2 · Composure

How do I stay calm when emotions run high?

Feel without handing over the wheel. Four breaths before a word or a decision. That space is the whole skill.

  3. Day 3 · Reasoning

How do I think clearly instead of making emotional decisions?

Do not trust hot thinking. Name the feeling, write the urge, sleep on anything that would change a life.

  4. Day 4 · Tenacity

How do I get back up when I fall?

Falling is guaranteed. Staying down is a choice. One sentence: I fell — but I am not staying down. Then one step.

  5. Day 5 · Collaboration

How do I let others support me instead of struggling alone?

Needing help is not a character flaw. Ask. Tell the truth. Let someone walk with you. Recovery was never a solo sport.

  6. Day 6 · Stewardship

How do I use my time, money, and energy wisely?

Ask what is costing the most stress this month — then spend toward the thing that makes next month quieter.

  7. Day 7 · Integration

How am I doing overall, and where do I need to improve?

A weekly review, not a verdict. What worked. What wobbled. Re-read the vision. Start the cycle again.

From the author

“Willpower will get you started. Only resilience will keep you free.”

James Sweet grew up in a house marked by poverty and addiction, earned his GED at seventeen, and fought his way through school, work, and early retirement — still feeling like he was running. The recovery community is where the running stopped. This book is the system he built so other people could stop running too. He is vice president of Root to Rise. The table at Cape Island Cafe is the living version of these pages.
